Hour Glass Knee Sockulator.

Hand Knit SockHere it is, the first draft of the sockulator that calculates sock shaping for knitters with shapely calves! I’ve knit one sock, and I’ll be adding photos as I take the pictures. Meanwhile, several people want to take a look at the sock pattern, so I’m posting for public review. I’ll edit and redate this entry when I have illustrations of the hand knit sock completed.

This sockulator lets you design a custom sock in nearly any length you like, that fits your foot, ankle and calf. You can design a footie, a knee sock or an anklet.

To design this sock, you will use two forms. The first form requests values used to design the sock foot and gusset. The second form contains values to design the leg; you will need to enter the sock length and the calf length. To use the form, go get a tape measure, find a sock you like and either knit a gauge swatch or pretend you knit one. Then fill the form out and create your own pattern.

Enter Gauge Information
When knitting your sock, you must match the gauge you enter here.
Enter your stitch gauge in stockinette. Stitch Gauge:
st/inch
Enter your row gauge in stockinette. Row Gauge:
st/inch

Design the sock foot and ankle.
You will design the rest of the sock on a second form which will appear when you submit this one.
Select from the pull down menu, then enter your shoe size in the box.

US Shoe Size:

Choose a heel flap height.
Some people like shorter heel flaps, some like taller ones. If these are your first socks, leave this on average.

Would you like to customize? Change the toggle choice above to “custom”. Afterwards follow edit the values in the boxes below. Otherwise, scroll down and click to continue to the next form.
Measure your foot and enter values for your sock below– but I recommend you subtracting 10% from the circumference because most people want their socks to hug their foot. Use your actual foot length, as most people don’t like short socks. (Though, strangely, I do.)

Foot length:
inches.
Foot circumference:
Ankle circumference:

Yellow: sock foot length.
Green: sock foot circumference.
Red: ankle circumference.
Click to continue designing your sock.

  2. Thanks so much for this! I have pretty big calves myself and I’m working on a pair of toe up socks that I want to grow into knee highs. So very timely…

  4. [...] No, it’s not math. I’m saying “A” and “B” because no matter what method you learn– DPN’s, magic loop or what not– you will see a sock pattern in another method. For example, my recent knee sock sockulator program creates sock directions for knitting on a circular needle using magic loop (that would be “A”); some people want to knit using three double pointed needles (that would be “method B”). Now, I will eventually create a pull down menu to let the user pick directions, but I need to code those first. Meanwhile, you might want to knit the sock today, right? [...]

  5. This is great, I’ve been looking for a crocheted sock that went all the way up my humongous legs. Now is there a pattern for socks with toes for each toe. like the fingers in gloves? I’ve been looking for those too. Keep up the good work for us folks with LEGS@!!!!

  6. This is awesome! Just knitted my first sock, but wanted a knee sock and it was too narrow. Now I understand how to increase circumference to make a knee sock. Thanks!

  7. This custom sock calculator is great. I was giving myself a migraine trying to figure out how to make my grandaughter the knee high socks she has been asking me for.
    Thank You!!!!!!!!!

  8. I didn’t realise at the beginning but this site has a lot of useful things. This one – and I’m glad I’ve stumbled across it – I’ll pass to my aunt so that so could make me socks in a proper way.
Aunt, if you’re reading, I’m sorry but you always make socks that slide off my leg very easily.

  10. Love it!! Thank you so much. I get tired of asking DH to try on his socks again and again throughout the knitting process and STILL getting the toes wrong. And I wanted to make knee-highs for my DD. Yay for this calculator!!

Speaking of… do you think you might add an option for anatomical toes at some point? DH really needs ‘em. His big toe is crazy-longer than his other toes.
